Susan Meiselas becomes our latest castaway as we ask the celebrated Magnum photographer which eight photographs she would take with her to a desert island? Susan will reveal her choices to our regular host Stephen Bull during Photo London 2017.
About Susan Meiselas
For over forty years, American documentary photographer Susan Meiselas has focussed on human rights issues and social justice. She is particularly known for her work in Latin America. Her intense images are said to be “as much at home in newspapers and magazines as they are on museum walls”.
Meiselas joined Magnum in 1976 and became a full member in 1980. She has won numerous international awards including the Robert Capa Gold Medal Award (1979) for “outstanding courage and reporting”, the American Society of Magazine Photographers (ASMP) Award (1982), MacArthur Fellowship (1992), Cornell Capa Infinity Award (2005) plus the Krasna-Kraus Book of the Year and LUMA Book Award at Rencontres d’Arles (2009) for Susan Meiselas, In History.
About Desert Island Pics
Loosely following the format of Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, our touring photography talks series invites artists, writers and curators to select eight images they’d take with them to a desert island. Writer and lecturer Stephen Bull (University of Brighton), discusses each castaway’s selection with them and discovers how their choices reflect their life and career. Previous, Desert Island Pics castaways include Martin Parr, Jeremy Deller, Alison Jackson, Martin Barnes, Sean O’Hagan and Brett Rogers.
