Digital Event: Shoair Mavlian in conversation with Eli Durst
Join us on Instagram Live at 7pm BST on Wednesday 27 May for a Photoworks Digital Event.
Shoair Mavlian, Director, Photoworks will be in conversation with Eli Durst in the latest of our series of weekly virtual conversations. The pair will discuss Durst’s book The Community, published by Morel Books, as well as his wider practice.
The Community began as a photographic glimpse inside American church basements and expanded from there. Looking at various group activities — from Boy Scout meetings to New Age spiritual practices to corporate team building exercises — The Community is a visual investigation of the pursuit of meaning and purpose in a world often resistant to interpretation.
Durst was born in Austin, Texas. After graduating from Wesleyan University in 2011, he worked at the renowned fine art printing studio Griffin Editions in Brooklyn while also serving as an assistant to street photographer Joel Meyerowitz. Eli received an MFA in photography from the Yale School of Art and is the winner of the 2016 Aperture Portfolio Prize, a 2017 Aaron Siskind Individual Photographer’s Fellowship Grant, and a 2019 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. He currently lives in Austin, Texas, where he teaches photography at the University of Texas.
