City Collective: Curator’s Choice

13 May 2015

City Collective - the inter-generational group of local residents formed for a Photoworks HOUSE15 co-commission - were asked to select archive images from Queenspark's Brighton & Hove Photographic Collection.

Led by filmmaker, Abigail Norris, and theatre director, Maria Pattinson, the group have explored each other’s experiences of conflict – both personal and political. Their workshops used an image from  Brighton & Hove Photographic collection as a starting point. The resulting dual screen installation can be viewed during the HOUSE 15 festival until 24 May 2015. You can read more about the project here.

The Brighton & Hove Photographic Collection is managed by community publishers QueenSpark who invited the City Collective group to choose their favourite photographs from the collection.

Of their “Curator’s Choice” City Collective say:  Most of us are born and bred in Brighton. These images act as triggers for our memories. They help us look back and remember the past as well as encouraging us to glance into the future and question where we are now. It is intriguing to see the city changing through the decades whilst also remembering that the bricks and mortar would mean nothing without the people, the experiences and the memories.

In relation to our City Collective’s project we were also captivated by the dates of some of the images as these resonated with the stories that we shared whilst working together. We became interested in how the date of a photograph adds to the significance we give to it.”
