The Weight of the Earth

Selected by Photoworks as part of the International Photography Festivals Association’s IPFA Award 2025. Debmala Ray Choudhuri’s series The Weight of the Earth is a diary of fragility, loss, and desire. Developed over seven years, the series unfolds as a multilayered narrative exploring identity as a South Asian immigrant in a politically and socially fragmented America, the tragic death of a lover and the artist’s experience of tuberculosis as a young adult.

The work examines the intricate relationship between mourning and melancholia. Through self-portraits and portraits of strangers and friends, Choudhuri draws on the idea of the rhizome to expand conversations around mental health, trans and queer experiences, desire, and longing. Taking the form of a collaborative performance fiction, the project explores questions of self-affirmation and the possibility of creating community within their ‘imagined homeland’ of America.
