Where We Meet
Where We Meet explores how spaces of making can function as sites of learning and connection. Developed by artists Eva Louisa Jonas and Kairo Urovi with a group of young people, the installation is a response to their creative workshop environment and its material practices.
Working across staged and improvised image-making, the exhibition explores queer community organising and DIY building culture. Photographs trace moments of engagement with tools, timber, workshop structures, and one another – gathered as part of a workshop that took place with the queer-led carpentry organisation In Our Hands, based in West Sussex.
The art works sit within a wooden structure devised by the artists and created by In Our Hands.
Part of the Queer Grounds Programme
Queer Grounds is a free programme of LGBTQ+ friendly creative workshops for young people aged 16 – 25 led by photographers Eva Louisa Jonas and Kairo Urovi delivered by Photoworks in partnership with the Devonshire Collective and Phoenix Art Space.
The programme invites young people to explore how LGBTQ+ communities have created alternative ways of coming together that are rooted in care, community, and collective action.
Participants use image-making to investigate collectivity as something living and connecting, visualising how people prop each other up, negotiate roles, navigate tensions, and sustain one another over time, approaching photography as a way of working within collective processes rather than observing them from the outside.
Special thanks to Georjie Adams, the team and community members at In Our Hands for their help with the build. The build served as a training opportunity for women and gender-diverse people to develop their building skills. After the exhibition, we will return the structure to In Our Hands who will donate and develop it in conversation with a local community group.
Generously supported by the Chalk Cliff Trust.
