Launching in Autumn for Photoworks Friends, Cosmophotographies takes Yuk Hui’s conception of cosmotechnics, and applies it to photography. Hui argues that technology is never neutral, embodying the values, assumptions and ways of knowing which shaped it – while simultaneously shaping them. Cosmophotographies asks what ideology is embedded in the camera and the images it produces; in the face of impending environmental and climate breakdown, can we urgently envisage something else?

About the Annual

Publishing has been central to Photoworks since our earliest years, providing a platform for new photography, critical writing and debate around the role of images in contemporary culture.

The Annual is our collectable journal, published each autumn. Each issue explores a central theme, bringing together emerging and established artists with writers working across photography, contemporary art and related fields. Through new commissions and critical writing, the Annual creates space for ideas, experimentation and dialogue.

Our publishing began with Insight, an occasional black-and-white publication that laid the groundwork for Photoworks magazine, launched in 2003. Published twice a year, the magazine quickly developed an international readership, featuring artists’ work, essays, reviews and critical writing on photography.

In 2013, the magazine became the Annual, marking a shift towards thematic, commissioned publishing and bringing artists and writers together to explore photography in broader social and cultural contexts.

Since then, the Annual has continued to evolve alongside Photoworks’ wider programme, with issues including Communities, Collectives and Collaboration (2014), Beyond the Bias: Reshaping Image (2016), A New Europe (2018), The Thing (2023), Multi Multi (2024) and 30 Years of Photoworks (2025).
