Beneath the Waves centres on a defined stretch of South East England’s shoreline from the White Cliffs of Dover through Dungeness, Hastings and Brighton, as a space where geological, political and ecological anxieties converge. The project inscribes mathematical formulae, tidal diagrams and cartographic fragments directly into the photographic field, treating measurement and mythology as parallel structures of belief rather than opposing modes of knowing. Through sustained attention to surface, edge and depth, this paper proposes photography as a mode of dwelling with instability: mapping without fixing, measuring without foreclosing.
Zoe Childerley is a British artist and researcher whose practice uses photography as fieldwork, exploring how landscapes and coastlines are shaped by cultural narratives and political histories. Her AHRC-funded PhD, with the National Maritime Museum, investigates photography and maritime life. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and published two books.
