Instagram Takeover: Diana Markosian

Our latest guest editor for our Instagram Takeover is Armenian-American photographer, Diana Markosian, who's work features in our Issue 22 Photoworks Annual themed on Women.

Diana will be taking over our Instagram account for a week, showing us different aspects of her day-to-day life as well as  the behind the scenes of her practice. Her work was selected for the latest Photoworks Annual, released in November 2015.

She joins a list of guest editors such as Jason Larkin, Simon Roberts, Aaron Schuman and Rodrigo Orrantia.

Diana Markosian is a photographer whose work explores the relationship between memory and place. She received her master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism at 20. Her work has since taken her to some of the most remote corners of the world, where she has worked on both personal and editorial work. Her images can be found in publications like The New York Times, The New Yorker and Time Magazine. Her work is represented by Reportage by Getty Images.

Getting lost and meeting witches in Eastern Poland. I traveled to the region to meet the last few ‘Whisperers’ who claim to have a personal connection with the Virgin Mary, which gives them the ability to heal people both physically and spiritually. Photo @markosian

One of my favorite trips this year was to Egypt on assignment for National Geographic. This is an image of a woman praying at an ancient church in Minya, Egypt, where the holy family is believed to have stayed for three days. Photo @markosian

So happy to be taking over @photoworks_uk’s feed for the next week. I’ll be sharing images from my past projects. This is one of the first images I made in Chechnya, where I started working as a photographer in 2011. It’s an image of Serzhen-Yurt, a mountain village, which I lived in when working on my project, Goodbye My Chechnya, a series on the coming of age of young girls in the aftermath of war.
