This paper explores the work of photographers and artists working at the intersection of installation, material practice, and imaging technologies. Between economies of attention and claims to reality, this presentation considers how images also function as proposition and prophecy, opening spaces for disaster and emergency, possibility and dream.

Duncan Wooldridge is an artist, writer and curator, and is Reader in Photography at the School of Digital Arts, MMU. He is the author of ‘To Be Determined: Photography and the Future’ (SPBH/Mack, 2021) and the editor of ‘Written Down/Written Up: The Collected Writings of John Hilliard’ (Mack 2026).
