Following the theme of our In Focus programme, we welcome Becky Warnock to our takeover sharing her insight into the process of working to help make the commission happen.

With an avid interest in authorship, Becky Warnock works as an artist and organiser to raise questions about modern identities and the politics or representation. From launching a pop –up Women’s museum as a statement of protest against the Jack the Ripper Musuem to her project The Colonial Eye which interrogates the role of NGO imagery in the representation of Africa; she has dedicated her practice to furthering the dialogue around social justice. Both in the UK and internationally, she has led community engagement departments of Photovoice and Photofusion, and developed programmes for the Tate, Open Eye Gallery and Photoworks. She is also co-founder of the Art Council supported FORM collective.

#InFocus presenting Anna Farley also included a programme of action research and photography activities for neurodiverse adults and young people. Artists and social care practitioners have been working together in adult social care settings across Sussex to develop and deliver this programme of activity. The participating artists were @alejandractr, @leslie.bill and @lynnweddleartist . @susanmeiselas often talks about how important it is to her that her work is shown within the community that she made it with. In this way exhibition space can be a space for bringing together communities and challenging preconceptions. It is important that artists, curators and institutions find ways to make that possible. . . @bxwarnock here! Artists working in #sociallyengaged practice often debate whether the #process or #product is the most important focus of a project. The #InFocus commission found ways to install the work made throughout the workshops as part of the final exhibition. Today is the final day to see their brilliant work! . . . @bxwarnock here! @the.anna.log and I met through my work @photofusionuk where she runs the brilliant #Autography project. #Autography is a project for adults with #Autism, which uses photography as a way for participants to explore and communicate their experiences of their #ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition) Again, my role on this project is to support her to facilitate and manage the process, not to led it myself. #Representation is discussed in relation to other marginalised communities, but often forgotten about when it comes to #Disability. A key part of the Autography project creating an accessible space for participants, is knowing that the project is run FOR adults with autism, BY adults with autism. Annas knowledge and understanding is crucial to the success of the project, and we worked hard to apply that to the gallery setting for her show @phoenix_artspace . . . . @bxwarnock here! For her commission #InFocus, @the.anna.log wanted to create a series of infinity cubes which explore how her #autism manifests day-day. Made by extracting stills from go-pro footage from the camera Anna wore solidly for two weeks, each of the 365 cubes looks at a different part of her daily experience. A key part of my role was supporting Anna to draw out the ideas that she wanted to explore, and make sure that that was communicated to an audience who may have no prior understanding of what it means to be #autistic. . . In the show there are 300 small cubes, each of which illustrate the day-day moments in which her autism affects her life. These snapshots capture the small and less small adjustments she and her support make in her daily life. These can be simple – wearing sunglasses or headphones to support her sensory needs, not travelling at rush hour to avoid the overwhelming environment of the tube – or they might be bigger changes – needing a support worker to help with her employment or turning over the completion of Personal Independant Payment forms to her mum. More about these later! . . . @bxwarnock here!
