Born in Beijing, Guanyu Xu now lives and works in Chicago, where he also earned his MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 2019.

Guanyu’s photographic work focuses on the exploration of his personal history and identity: which looks at his experience of being born into a conservative Chinese family and living as a gay man in the USA.

In his series, Temporarily Censored Home, 2018, he creativity installed his work into his parents home in Beijing, Exhibiting his queer identity into this heterosexual space.

His work has been exhibited and screened internationally, including Aperture Foundation (NY), Athens Photo Festival (GRE), Format Photo Festival (UK) and EXPO Chicago (CHI).
