Born in Saitama Prefecture in 1987, she was brought up in Gunma Prefecture. Suffering from congenital tibial hemimelia, she made the decision to have both her legs amputated at the age of 9. She produces portraits of herself together with her hand-sewn works. From 2011 she began her High Heel Project in which she wore custom-made high-heel shoes to perform on stage as a singer or model. In addition she gives lectures, writes and carries out a wide range of other activities.

Mari Katayama’s work will be on exhibition at White Rainbow Gallery from 24 January – 2 March 2019.
