Hi, this is @slyrosi taking over Photoworks ig account this week. I’ll be sharing some pictures from my project Encounter, on show at Jerwood Space from the 15th of January. Those are my personal favourites from the family album. In my family house photographs are stored in boxes, and are often touched, exchanged, copied, folded and at times damaged. The subject portrayed is posing for the camera at the photographers studio. My mother narrates • “We didn’t own cameras so every Sunday we used to dress up in our finest clothes, go to church and stop by the photographer’s studio to have our portrait taken. It was almost like a ritual”. That’s why the West African studio portrait is so influential in my work, as well as photography as a tactile experience. #photoworks_uk #silviarosi #instagramtakeover #photography #familyalbum #lome #togo

Hi, this is @slyrosi again, taking over Photoworks ig account this week. I’ll be sharing some pictures from my project Encounter, on show at Jerwood Space from the 15th of January. This is a studio portrait of my young Mother, the main source of inspiration for my work. The picture was taken in Lomé at the photographers studio, a few years before she migrated to Italy. Next to it a picture of my grandmother shot in the same studio. Her work as market trader at Assigame market in Lomé inspired my research on head carrying and defined market trade as a family tradition, constantly challenged and redefined by the process of migration. #photoworks_uk #silviarosi #instagramtakeover #photography #familyalbum #archive #studiophotography #westafrica #togo #lome
