Photoworks presents Desert Island Pics with Mike Mandel in partnership with Format International Photography Festival

QUAD, Derby

Tickets £5 (available on the door)

Which eight photographs would you take to a desert island?

American artist Mike Mandel reveals his choices to our regular host Stephen Bull and discusses how they reflect his life and career.

In 1977 Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan co-authored Evidence, a photo narrative which comprised images found in government and corporate archives, such as police, fire departments, aerospace and engineering firms. Through reinterpreting the sequence, the images came to symbolise a new message about the failure of faith in progress and technology.

For over 30 years, American artist Mike Mandel (b 1950, Los Angeles) has  focused his work on public art projects  – transforming photographic imagery into large scale glass and porcelain tile mosaic murals and billboards. Mandel’s work is represented in public collections throughout the world,  he has received numerous awards and fellowships and he has been invited to participate in festivals including Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art (2006), Art Basel (2009) and Photo Espana (2009)

Mandel’s 1977 publication Evidence, co-authored with Larry Sultan has been recognised as a precursor to subsequent postmodern strategies of photo practice and was re-published in 2004 by Distributed Art Publishers in New York. More recently the book The State of Ata, 2010 is a collaboration with his wife Chantal Zakari.

Desert Island Pics is an ongoing series of Photoworks talks, loosely based on the format of Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs. Previous castaways have included Jeremy Deller, Martin Parr, Anna Fox, Sean O’Hagan, Peter Fraser, Mishka Henner, Simon Baker and Simon Roberts.
