In January 2021 Photoworks, in partnership with Shout Out Loud, English Heritage’s national youth engagement programme, commissioned four incredible young artists to make new work for the exhibition England’s New Lenses.
Unfortunately, the exhibition was vandalised in a racially motivated attack soon after it opened in August. We have been working with the artists and people involved in the project to support them following these events.
Photoworks is committed to anti-racism. The wellbeing of the artists and their wider collaborators are Photoworks priority and we continue to work closely with them as this situation unfolds.
England’s New Lenses has made a valuable contribution to offering alternative narratives on Englishness and heritage from a youth perspective. The reaction to the exhibition has been overwhelmingly positive and we are focused on ensuring it is not overshadowed by the disgusting actions of a small minority.
