A partnership with Widening Participation at the University of Brighton
Young people aged 13 – 16 taking part in Saturday Club (part of Photoworks
Photography Club) have been inspired by Jerwood/Photoworks Awards 2020.
Our Photography Club is an initiative enabling young people to meet regularly, develop their camera skills alongside a professional photographer, produce photography and gain an Arts Award qualification.
This edition of Photography Club is delivered in partnership with the Widening Participation team at the University of Brighton.
Guided by photographic artist Lindsey Smith with undergraduate ambassadors Hannah O’Hara and Emma Adams, the young photographers visited the exhibition at Jerwood Space and explored a range of photographic concepts, techniques and processes.
Post lockdown, the programme moved online. A series of short assignments sent to the group included virtual exhibition tours, inspirational quotes, thought-provoking prompts and suggested artists to research.
Assignments asked participants to create a family portrait in lockdown, a photo-collage inspired by a sense of place, re-stage a photograph, make a photo-sculpture and finally, create a short and simple moving image bringing photography to life in unexpected ways.
Despite Covid-19 challenges, the level of engagement from the group and the quality of their work has been outstanding. Check out the blog set up as a supportive platform for the group to share and critique their work.
