Our youth showcase provides a platform for photography by 16-18 year olds

BHASVIC

This project explores the theme of facial abstraction in relation with society’s enforcement of cultural norms of beauty. I wanted my work to be shocking and evoke a sort of rebellion against societies power of what outer beauty is meant to be. I have used a sheer sheet to pull and distort the features of my model, also encasing her in this sheet to reinforce the message of being trapped in our cultures expectancies. Along with this I experimented with using the sheer sheet in a different way by pulling it tight and the model pressing her face against it as it is stretched, giving a more soft toned image, as oppose to the crisp finish of the other three. These images are warm toned from the face complemented with the cool tones from the sheet , all enhanced by the studio lighting and black background.I wanted my work to be striking and for viewers to question their own views surrounding this topic by how this work steps out of the cultural norms.
