Instagram Takeover: Craig Atkinson

Café Royal Books is an independent publisher of small photobooks generally focussing on aspects of change in the UK from 1970—2000. CRB was founded by Craig Atkinson in 2005 as a method of disseminating art, outside of ‘the gallery’. Café Royal publishes drawing occasionally alongside the weekly photographic publications. The books are collected by many private, public and education libraries including MoMA, Tate, V&A. Atkinson’s work shifts between drawing, often beginning drawings with no fixed idea of how they might end up, and photography, ‘as a tourist’. The unfamiliar is a common link. Craig Atkinson is based in Southport and is a lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Central Lancashire.

I sometimes make books of my own work. I like to explore places as a tourist. I think the unknown brings things that knowledge lets you miss, so I record these walks and places. I find my self drawn to concrete buildings and estates, not particularly interested in their socio-political status, more their vast scale and sculptural form.
