Instagram Takeover: Dominic Hawgood

Commissioned artist for the Brighton Digital Festival, Dominic Hawgood becomes our latest guest editor of our Instagram takeover, September 2017.

Dominic Hawgood’s work has emerged out of photography’s expanded field. His practice spans still and moving image, and uses light installation to reflect on the experience of the real world within the digital realm.

This is the structure I built for my latest commission from @brightondigitalfestival . It’s propped up on cans of water, and when the door is closed, becomes sound proof. Inside it’s illuminated by LEDs, and a sensor triggers the animation and audio to play. For the sound design of my new site specific I installation and animation I commissioned the very talented @l_a_n_a_r_k. I had a very clear idea how audio needed to function, what it must communicate, and the feelings it had to generate. We share similar interests in our pursuit of digital, making the translation of ideas from one medium to another very precise. He is a cross disciplinary artist now working with simulation, drawing upon fields such as Computer Science and Visual Effects to explore realism using light, lens, and code. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art his most notable achievements amongst others have included, winning the British Journal of Photography International Photography Award, being selected for Foam Talent, headlining PhotoIreland Festival, and exhibiting at Whitechapel Gallery.

This year he has shown at Haus der Photographie der Deichtorhallen, Hamburg and is part of another upcoming group exhibition at Nobel Peace Centre, Oslo.
