Marysa Dowling’s practice considers human exchange, exploring how people interact with each other and their environments.

Her playful and thoughtful projects use photography to build connections across communities and societies. Dowling has recently finished a two-year residency at Great Ormond Street Hospital, through visual research with patients, families, and staff, she explored ways in which we care, communicate and connect through our hands.

Good afternoon @marysadowling here. I’m delighted to begin my @photoworks_uk takeover today. Over the coming week I’ll be sharing some developing works, recent connections and research between projects, some of which have taken me by surprise, plus a 10 year project currently being made into a book. These images were made in Guadalajara, Mexico last year for The Conversation. Having worked in Mexico for the last 7 summers I’ve developed strong connections and ways of working with students, other artists and local communities there. I wanted to create a long term project using portraiture as a way to invite connections and conversations between women in Mexico and the UK. The Conversation begins with ideas about what we want to share. We choose a location and start to play with what’s around us, concentrating on gestures, the body and interactions with the environment. This year I’ll be working with women from @colectivohilos @itesouniversidad in Guadalajara and @allchangearts here in London to develop portraits with the women, initiating an exchange of both images and words through simple actions and gestures. #photoworks_uk #marysadowling #instagramtakeover #photography
