Tom Heatley
Since graduating in from the BA Photography at the University of Brighton in 2015, I have been working between the disciplines of photography and sculpture, making installations that aim to expand photographs into space and develop narratives between objects and images. My practice sits within the context of research into specific human cultures and manufactured objects and materials. Beginning by making site-specific object sculptures and installations for the camera, photographic prints are built into installations, which often respond to final exhibition venues through site-sensitive iterations of the work. This practice allows images and objects to share an equal platform as artefacts.
In October 2016 I exhibited as part of the Brighton Photo Fringe, with a solo show entitled DIY Dreams. The project looked at themes of home improvement and explores the misuse of tools and materials commonly found on DIY projects. Installations borrowed aesthetics from DIY stores, interior design showrooms and garden sheds. Previously, The Sculptors was shown as part of the UoB Graduate show in 2015 and subsequently in the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill and at the Truman Brewery, Brick Lane. This project looked at the sculpture department at the university, focussing on the traditions and culture of a contemporary artschool in an ethnographic style study. Final installations tap into individual working practices, through photographs of curated still lifes and object sculptures, displayed with material borrowed from the sculpture studios.
