Biography

Koral Carballo (born in Poza Rica, Veracruz, Mexico, 1987) is a visual artist, consultant, and photojournalist based in Mexico.

I am interested in artistic research from a position in which the intimate-visual is intrinsically political. My work is based on Photography but relates to oral history, archiving, portraiture, and visual poetry expanding representations linked to necropolitical violence, Afro-descendence, and its relation with memory.

She studied journalism at the Universidad Popular Aútonoma del Estado de Puebla (2010); the Contemporary Photography Seminar by the Centro de las Artes de San Agustín (CaSA) and the Centro de la Imagen (2014); the Diploma in Documentary Photography at the Centro de las Artes de San Agustín (CaSA) coordinated by Joan Liftin (2019); Migration Project Development Laboratory of the Magnum Foundation at Columbia University (2018); Camp 20 photographers Mexico (2017); and the Eddie Adams Workshop XXXV (2022).

Carballo has exhibited her work in Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands,  Spain, Switzerland, The United States, and Uruguay. Her work is part of art collections like Leica Gallery Mexico, Manuel Álvarez Bravo Photographic Center, MoA-g SA (The Museum of Avant-garde), Televisa Foundation, Open Society Foundations, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and the New York Public Library.

Koral founded the International Festival of Journalistic and Documentary Photography Mirar Distinto in Veracruz, Mexico. She is Leica Camera’s ambassador in Latin America, collaborates with Ruda Collective, and is an Artist from the National System in Mexico.
