Biography
Nicholas J.R. White is a photographer based on the Isle of Skye in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. His projects are centred on uses of landscape, community and the ways in which we interact with our natural spaces.
Nicholas graduated from Plymouth College of Art in 2013, with his series ‘The Militarisation of Dartmoor’, which recorded the historic military training areas of Dartmoor National Park. In 2015, Nicholas began ‘Black Dots’, a now decade long series exploring the UK’s network of mountain bothies (remote refuge huts) and the community of strangers that temporarily inhabit them. The work has been published widely, winning the Royal Photographic Society Environmental Bursary. Since 2018, Nicholas has committed to working with Romanian organisation Foundation Conservation Carpathia, recording their efforts to establish a wilderness reserve deep in the Southern Carpathian Mountains. In 2020, Todd Hido awarded Nicholas the IMA Landscape Award for his work on the slate-landscape of the English Lake District.
Through 2020-2023, Nicholas released a series of landscape photographs made on Dartmoor National Park – his childhood home. Pictures from ‘Elmwood’ were exhibited alongside Garry Fabian Miller for his survey show, Adore at Arnolfini Arts, Bristol, UK, in 2023. This work was later exhibited as part of ‘Dartmoor: A Radical Landscape’ at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, who hold Nicholas’ work in their permanent collection. In 2025,Nicholas was awarded the a-n Artist Bursary to fund the development of a series of sound recordings to be played alongside his physical artworks.
In addition to project work, Nicholas works on assignments internationally covering stories on environment, landscape and the intersection of human and non-human worlds. He regularly delivers talks on his work at universities across the UK and conferences including The Meeting of Minds, The Photography Show at Birmingham NEC and in 2025 was invited to partake in a lecture series on wilderness and the photograph at the University of Oxford.
