Photoworks is pleased to announce Nicholas J.R. White is doing a Digital Residency across July 2026. Keep an eye out to learn more about Nicholas’ practice, through which he explores the relationship between people and their natural environments, drawing on a mix of landscape and portrait photography.
Biography
Nicholas J.R. White (b.1989) is a photographer living on the Isle of Skye, in the north-west Highlands of Scotland.
Graduating from Arts University Plymouth in 2013, Nicholas was awarded places on two consecutive Magnum Photos Professional Practice courses in 2014. He is a recipient of the Royal Photographic Society Environmental Bursary (2017), the IMA Landscape Prize with Todd Hido (2020) and is currently the Ampersand Foundation and Photoworks Fellow.
In 2025, he was awarded The Sankey Photography Archive Grant with Signal Film and Media, placing him in Barrow-in-Furness, the English town that builds Britain’s Nuclear Submarines. This work lead to his current long-term project that examines the connected narratives between faith and the nuclear deterrent, to be exhibited throughout the UK in 2027.
Nicholas has exhibited internationally, most recently at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, who hold his work in their permanent collection. In addition to his own work, Nicholas has worked on assignment for The New Yorker, National Geographic, The New York Times, Noema and many others.
When not working as a photographer, Nicholas is a commercially endorsed skipper, operating whale watching boats on the Western Isles.
