In the world around us and within us, we exist as fluid and solid beings, two forces that work together to form what we call life. Rivers flow without end, ever-adapting to their course, while mountains stand resolute, unyielding to time. Our emotions rise and fall like tides, revealing the fluid nature of our being, while our core beliefs and sense of self provide a solid foundation. Emotions shift, bringing forth change, while our identities offer stability. With each new year, we pause to reflect, considering how we might reshape what we once saw as flaws—recognizing them now as markers of our growth and stepping stones toward progress. In this New Year’s Commission, Suzie Howell continues her exploration of the body and the land.
“For this commission I wanted to create a piece that continued from my series Bodyscapes where I explore relationships and connections between the body and the land. This image is a consideration of fluidity and solidity, of the porous nature of our skin and the earth and aims to be something hopeful and open for the new year.”
