Medway is located in Kent, South East of the UK. Medway is historically home to Charles Dickens, Chatham Docks and many other celebrated heritage. Medway is a fast evolving with an exciting arts and culture scene. Our attention in Medway is to contribute to its vibrant creative scene by championing photography by further creating opportunities for artists. Our Photography Champion in Medway Seema Khalique, she is currently working with local artists and organisations to establish a steering group. Seema will work collectively with the community to establish the needs for artist working with Photography. Seema aims to build a supportive community for artist to both gain value for their practise and relish in a series of social events that can be enjoyed by creatives and the wider community.
About Seema Khalique
Seema Khalique is a photography and moving image Artist, Curator and Producer. Seema studied BA Media, Culture and Communications. Her career includes work in TV & Film, Radio, Theatre and taught A Levels in Media, Film and Photography. Her work explores ideas of memory, identity and personal history through documentary and portraiture. Her photographic series ‘Ma’ was selected for the London Open 2022 and exhibited at the Whitechapel Gallery. Seema has been published in ‘The London Open 2022’, ‘Photomonitor’, ‘From Sylhet to Spitalfield’ and zines ‘Ma’ & ‘Lost in the Soot’. Seema curated ‘About Then’ a group exhibition for the Stephen Lawrence Gallery, London.Seema’s socially engaged practise represents marginalised communities, by giving voice to their stories it empowers and improves their wellbeing. These stories adopt new communities of creative engagement and nourish existing audiences. Seema a member of 2 photography communities, this experience influences her understanding that best practice is achieved through a strong creative community, who advocate each other. This is what she hopes to achieve for the Photography Champions Network in Medway.
