Portsmouth is a port city on England’s south coast, and a growing hub for photography, with many talented people engaging with all formats of the medium.
Our Photography Champion in Portsmouth is Katherine Thomson, is working with a steering group made up of professionals from Aspex, UOP and Pompey Darkroom to establish needs of the photography community in Portsmouth. Katherine has identified a n appetite amongst the community towards a more critical discourse around photography, with Aspex and Pompey Darkroom leading this through a programme of talks and exhibitions.
Katherine seeks to work as a crystalliser of all that is happening in Portsmouth, helping to tie together different programmes and ambitions and securing Portsmouth’s place as a destination for photography to further activate the already vibrant scene. Katherine will further achieve this by running a series of social events over the summer with community building in mind, offering support for creatives and benefitting the wider communities who engage with them.
About Katherine Thomson
Katherine is a photographer and arts marketing professional based in London and Hampshire. Growing up in Southsea, Katherine developed a strong connection to Portsmouth, a city that served as her gateway to arts and culture during her teenage years. Since graduating from Arts University Bournemouth with a BA in Photography, Katherine has worked in both the non-profit and commercial arts industries. Her career took her to Berlin, where Katherine worked as Digital Marketing Coordinator at E-WERK Luckenwalde for four years. As a grassroots contemporary art centre, E-WERK aims to create an alternative economic model for the industry while showcasing international artists in a small, former-industrial community.
Katherine has now returned to the UK and, alongside her role as Photoworks Photography Champion, Katherine works as a freelance arts marketer, assisting artists with their social media output. Katherine is also a portrait photographer and enjoys capturing images of artists in their creative spaces.
