Wandering, Wondering was shot in South Korea but, says artist Seok-Woo Song, is a universal story of growing up. Dealing with the experience of maturing, it reflects young people’s journey into adulthood as they become more socialised and learn to fit existing social structures. Song recently left his 20s and believes his series will resonate most with other young men, who are learning to navigate cultural norms of masculinity at a time when gender roles are rapidly evolving. But he adds that Wandering, Wondering is aimed at everyone, including those reminiscing about the past, and those looking into the future.
Born in Seoul in 1993, Song has a BFA in Photography and Media from Daegu Arts University, and an MFA from the department of photographic design at Hongik University Graduate School of Industrial Arts. He recently graduated his MFA in Korea National University of Arts. His work often encompasses characters and social relations, and is currently concerned with the relationships people build up with others, especially the gestures and language they use to create these networks. Wandering, Wondering also has a spiritual dimension, tapping into the grey area between the conscious and the unconscious, between learned and innate behaviour.
