This limited edition book is the result of a Photoworks commission at the Mass Observation Archive by artist Tim Brennan. Drawing on the content of this extraordinary collection of observations about everyday life, Brennan presents material from the boxes named Art, Astrology, Photography and Wall Chalkings, unearthing, amongst other things, a mysterious report by archeologist and occultist T C Lethbridge on Fifth Column spy activity in Cambridgeshire. In previous work including Museum of Angels, Codex: Crusade and Republic of Atlantis, Brennan offered us a working model for the role of the artist as historian. English Anxieties continues the mining of history with a series of reflections on cultural value and social agency, modernism, power and paranoia, and the materiality of the archive.
Featuring an introduction by Russell Roberts and essays by Andrew Biswell and Peter Davidson.
