This book introduces an important artist with an outstanding body of work, bringing together photographs made over several years at sites throughout Europe. Hughes’s photographs concentrate on the peripheral, marginal zones and strange disconnected gaps of our contemporary social landscape. These non-places are where strange atmospheres collect and life seems disengaged. There is no intentional similarity between the locations depicted although each is carefully chosen and considered. Instead, by certain topographic and atmospheric conditions, Hughes’s photographs dwell on sites that people, light or the prevailing weather might create; a lone building on the edge of a city or an abandoned landscape. With an essay by David Chandler.
