About this work:

“When I started making work in Mumbai I focused on private spaces. In their own space a sitter can be comfortable, really be themselves. People were being open about themselves and their sexuality beyond what I had been expecting, or hoping for.

But I began to realise the context was missing for the project, that I needed something to show the sitters’ boldness and the cultural background they were willing to show their image in.

I heard about the difficulties for couples, both gay and heterosexual, finding somewhere to be private together. Down by the beach, on the steps by the waterfront, even on the hard shoulder alongside the freeway, couples would try to find some privacy in a dark, but very public space.

I also heard stories of police raiding hotels and demanding to see evidence that couples were married before hauling them in front of press and parading them for their ‘indecency’. I think it was this last story that inspired my picture of the hotel by the beach.

I don’t know anything about the hotel and whether or not couples go there to use rooms by the hour, but it sits there next to a beach which is littered at night with couples, almost like a reminder of the privacy that is off-limits to them.”

This work is from the series Reimagine a Photoworks/FOCUS Festival Mumbai co-commission in partnership with the University of Brighton for Brighton Photo Biennial 2016.
