A new exhibition of photographs by local neurodivergent adults opens at Aspex Portsmouth this summer.
Neurodivergent adults and their support workers have been exploring creative photography techniques and developing new camera skills supported by artist Kate Watson.
Taking questions of ‘What makes us, us?’ ‘What makes us unique?’ and ‘What do we share in common?’ as starting points for self-exploration, participants have experimented with different photography processes.
The hands-on, process-led approach allowed the participants to create intimate, experimental, and visually striking portraits and personal explorations. Together, the pieces form a testament to the value of art as a universal communicative tool and means of self-expression.
Re-Focus is part of the In Focus programme, a partnership between Photoworks and Aspex Portsmouth. The programme is part of Explorers, a national creative programme increasing the visibility and representation of neurodivergent artists in contemporary visual art, led by Project Art Works with cultural partners nationwide.
Explorers is supported by Arts Council England and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
