The Jerwood/Photoworks Awards are a major commissioning opportunity supporting early-career artists working with photography to make new work and significantly develop their practice. They particularly seek to encourage artists exploring new approaches to photography.
Now in their fifth edition, the Awards are for UK-based artists who are between one and ten years into their practice to realise ambitious new works for a national touring exhibition.
Two artists will receive a £15,000 award each (comprising £10,000 fee and £5,000 production budget) with a full package of support from Photoworks to create new work over a 12-month period. This includes:
- £10,000 artist fee
- £5,000 production budget
- Access to a £5,000 printing budget from print partner Spectrum Photographic
- Mentoring support from a high-profile international pool of experts for at least 12-months
- Curatorial support from Photoworks
- A two-person exhibition in London
- A UK touring exhibition including presentations with associated partners Ffotogallery (Cardiff), Barnsley Civic (South Yorkshire) and Street Level Photoworks (Glasgow).
The full value of each award package is £32,000.
The Awards are a collaboration between Jerwood Foundation and Photoworks, supported by Spectrum Photographic. Previous recipients have included Joanne Coates, Heather Agyepong, Silvia Rosi, Theo Simpson, Alejandra Carles-Tolra, Sam Laughlin, Lúa Ribeira, Matthew Finn, Joanna Piotrowska and Tereza Zelenková.

Artists will be selected through an open call and the final selection of awardees will be decided by the following judging panel:
- Cindy Sissokho, Curator, Cultural Producer & Writer
Cindy Sissokho is a curator, cultural producer, art consultant, and writer with a specific focus on anticolonial, social, and political practices within the arts and culture. - Ingrid Pollard, Artist and Researcher
Mixed-media artist and researcher, Ingrid Pollard uses digital, analogue and alternative photographic processes, also incorporating printmaking, image-text and artist books, installation, video and audio. - Louise Fedotov-Clements, Director of Photoworks
Louise is the Director of Photoworks where she leads the strategic vision and artistic direction of the organisation. - Lúa Ribeira, Photographer
Lúa Ribeira is a photographer based in Bristol, U.K. and a member of Magnum Photos since 2023.
- Maureen Paley, Founder / Director Maureen Paley, London
In 1984 she opened a gallery, initially named Interim Art, in a Victorian terraced house in London’s East End. After moving to Bethnal Green in 1999, the gallery was renamed Maureen Paley in 2004 as a celebration of its 20th anniversary. - Omar Kholeif, Director of collections and Senior Curator at Sharjah Art Foundation
Dr Omar Kholeif is an author, curator and historian who currently serves as director of collections and senior curator at Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE and as a visiting professor in critical race in fine art and the creative industries at MIMA Research Unit, Teesside University.
