“In October 2012 I went back to China and stayed there till May this year. I had been living in England for the past eight years and it was the longest period of time that I had stayed away from the UK. I went back because of visa problems and it took me that long to get it resolved.
I went back to my parents’ hometown for the first time in more than a decade during winter, where it gets to minus thirty degrees Celsius. During this time I travelled and took the new high-speed rail for the first time. I also went to Chongqing and Hangzhou, which are popular tourist destinations. The rest of the time I stayed in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Having everything postponed in my usual life in England while in China, I was trying to understand my mixed feelings towards this fast changing and familiar-yet-distant motherland of mine.” Mengxi Zhang
