Phoenix Art Space
Join Photoworks for Queer Grounds a free programme of LGBTQ+ friendly creative workshops for young people aged 16 – 25 led by photographer Eva Louisa Jonas.
This is a photography club specifically supporting young people who identify as LGBTQ+ or unsure and their friends.
No previous experience or specialist kit is required. We provide everything you need. Workshops are designed to be playful and fun, with a focus on creativity and skills development.
Please register here to take part in the autumn.
If you would like to chat about any aspect of this in confidence ahead of taking part, please get in touch.
What to expect
This workshop programme invites young people to explore how LGBTQ+ communities have created alternative ways of coming together that are rooted in care, community, and collective action.
We’ll look at how projects like community gardens, art groups, walking collectives, and DIY spaces have emerged out of necessity, offering quieter alternatives to nightlife. We’ll explore how they take shape differently in cities and rural areas, and what challenges or opportunities those settings bring for building and sustaining queer space.
Participants will develop practical and creative skills while contributing to collaborative processes that create ‘containers’, both physical and conceptual, for ideas, stories, and interests that emerge throughout the programme.
We’ll use photography as a creative tool to document, interpret, and reflect on these experiences, enabling participants to develop skills in visual storytelling and lens-based techniques. The focus is on care, collaboration, and imagining new ways of organising and living together.
Share your work and help others to get involved
Together we will also take part in BFest, Brighton’s Youth Arts Festival and Phoenix Art Space’s Youth Takeover – a creative programme led by and for young people from 15 to 30 November.
