Our next Youth Showcase features the work of Cain Suleyman, currently studying at BRIT School of Performing Arts and Technology.
Commute – Cain Suleyman
I regularly take journeys to college by public transport to and from Croydon, which is where I get most of my inspiration for my urban images. I am particularly interested in people’s journeys and their surroundings. The idea that people repeat the same routine every day, which becomes an auto pilot activity, is something I wanted to capture in these images. This is the overall theme throughout this collection of black and white images.

I’ve always been fascinated by people and how unique each individual is. I have wanted to capture people with genuine emotions. I use this fascination in my photography to capture people, in a moment that then portrays their current emotional state. I believe that becoming conscious of my internal world enables me to be fully connected with whom or what may be in front of my camera.
I’m currently undertaking a Musical Theatre course at my college. Being surrounded by actors every day, I am constantly in contact with vibrantly expressive and fascinating individuals. I wanted to create a series of images that showed a stripped back and true version of these people.
In this project, I took them out of their usual environment of playing a part, which they are used to doing every day. The purpose of these images is to show the person behind the wide range of characters that they play.

If we compress and hide our emotions then we are denying ourselves of being true to ourselves.
