Diana Tamane

Half-Love, 2008 –

Half-Love explores the relationship between Diana Tamane and her younger half-sister Elina. It continues a long line of projects focused on her family, using photography as a collaborative tool.

In 2008, the year of her sister’s birth, Tamane began taking photos of their time together, centred upon the family’s summer house in Kursīši, Latvia. A place of deep significance for the artist, she returns to Kursīši each year to spend the summer with family. This ongoing project, when viewed retrospectively, traces the life of Elina from birth to the spring of 2022.

For Tamane, the project and the process are both an observation and a love letter, a chance to give advice and to relive some of her own childhood experiences from a different perspective. The ongoing willingness of Elina to participate in the collaboration is a testament to the close bond between the two sisters. In 2022, Tamane wrote a letter to Elina, a letter which for Tamane looks back on her younger self and for Elina looks forward into her future. This text- based element forms part of the work and is exhibited alongside the images.

Diana Tamane (b. 1986 in Latvia) lives and works in Tartu, Estonia.
