Diasporic identity, gender politics, the environment, and families; the ten graduates selected for the Photography+ Graduate Issue this year tackle the big topics with elegance and wit. From Isabella Madrid’s anarchic take on Colombian femininity to Mohamed Hassan’s elegiac exploration of his relationship with his father, they use photography in unique, individual ways, championing image-making as a method of self-expression and communication. Congratulations on great work to Amin Abdulrahman, Murray Ballard, Africa Barrero-Alexander, Madeleine Brunnmeier, Noah Fodor, Mohamed Hassan, Isabella Madrid, Emily June Smith, Seok-woo Song, and Quincey Spagnoletti. Our Writer in Residence, Angelina Ruiz, wrote her first piece for Photography+ titled Why People Photograph for The Graduate Issue 2024.

These ten graduates were gathered via an open call which attracted a record number of entries, from artists all over the world. The quality of the submissions was extremely high. Photoworks is grateful to the judges who helped Photoworks Director Louise Fedotov-Clements and Photoworks Editor Diane Smyth select the final few: Marina Paulenka, Founding Director of Exhibitions at Fotografiska Berlin; Andrew Sanigar, Commissioning Editor at Thames & Hudson; and Bindi Vora, Artist and Senior Curator at Autograph. Thanks also to Photoworks Digital Marketing Officer Natalia Gonzalez Acosta for behind-the-scenes help, and to Photoworks Print Sponsor Spectrum Photographic for awarding a special prize to one artist – Isabella Madrid. Good luck to the 2024 P+ graduates, and to all those currently leaving education.
