Derbyshire based Photographer, Clare West, shares her black and white series 'Lineage' on our showcase, February 2018.
Lineage is an on-going and evolving project using found photography as the starting point and interweaving it with the photographers’ own images to form a narrative that explores the shifting dynamics of power, sexual politics and equality.
It aims to reflect on ideas of women’s heritage and the roles ascribed to them, albeit within the cultural and geographical confines of the available material and the limits of West’s own experience of being female.
The everyday found documents can reveal something about society’s values at that time and they are used as a compare and contrast tool with the present day to see what may have changed and what remains inherently the same. Beyond this tangible ‘evidence’ West also considers the collective conscious memory internalized into the psyche of every generation and handed down throughout time.
Clare West is a photographer currently based in Derbyshire.
