Photoworks Friends is for anyone who wants to learn and be a part of the contemporary photography sector. We are a globally recognised charity proud to offer an engaging, provocative, and insightful year-round programme. By becoming a Friend your annual contribution will also directly support our programme and fund opportunities for artists.

Last year, the scheme enabled us to support and platform the work of 100+ artists and writers, and the creative development of 1,200+ young people to develop their photography practice. This work would not be possible without the support of our community. In return for your annual contribution we offer a range of benefits for you to enjoy.

Photoworks Friends benefits

The Photoworks Annual

Receive our printed publication on contemporary photography, delivered to your door every October. Our latest issue, Multi Multi , gathers contemporary artists working with image replication, in 23 projects by image-makers from around the world.

The Photoworks Annual gathers lens-based artworks and essays according to a single theme or line of enquiry in contemporary photography. Previous issues have focused on ‘thingification’, protest, documenting LGBTQI+ history, and imaging a new post Brexit Europe through the lens of photography.

Our latest Annual 31, Multi Multi, features projects made with both cutting-edge technology and works created with the oldest analogue processes. It suggests that image replication is nothing new, but is intrinsically linked to the culture in which it was born, at the start of industrial capitalism.

Our festival in a box - From Little Acorns...

Receive a limited-edition Photoworks Festival in a Box. From Little Acorns… is a limited-edition publication designed to invite you to become the curator. Each box contains the work of ten artists: 18 posters, 10 labels, and a wall text that can be interpreted, adapted, and installed in many different forms.

The box is made for artists, curators, and enthusiasts; for creatives, collectives, clubs and communities to build on and stage their own photography festival. Each of the artworks can be installed on your own walls: at home, in your office, in a gallery, in your classroom or with your community. Inspired by Octavia Butler’s 1993 novel Parable of a Sower, and the 14th-century English proverb, ‘Mighty oaks from little acorns grow’, a metaphor suggesting that what we start and nurture now could grow into something vast and strong in the future. Using the ten artists’ work as a starting point, the festival theme From Little Acorns… is also a call to action for audiences to imagine and re-imagine the future.

As part of our work as a charity to support artists, Photoworks collaborates with emerging artists and writers to design and publish their photobooks. These, along with an archive of our annual publication—dating back to the 1990s when our magazine first launched—can be found in our shop. We also curate a selection of publications from other publishers featuring works by artists we’ve collaborated with or whose work inspires us. From time to time, we also commission artists for exclusive print sales and give our Friends the first opportunity to purchase them.
